Custom Floating Dock System

Lake of Bays | Completed Spring 2025

This Lake of Bays waterfront property required the replacement of an aging crib dock with a larger, more functional floating system. The homeowners wanted expanded space for entertaining, improved accessibility from shore, and a design better suited to boating, swimming, and relaxing with guests.

The Challenge

Several site conditions required thoughtful planning. Water levels fluctuate significantly throughout the year, meaning the dock needed to rise and fall with seasonal changes. The shoreline was shallow, requiring a long ramp to reach water deep enough for swimming and docking boats.

Additionally, the existing crib structure remained in place, and the homeowners preferred not to remove or disturb it due to cost, permitting requirements, and environmental considerations. While they appreciated the flexibility of a floating dock, they also wanted to minimize excessive movement during peak summer use.

The Solution

Elements of Muskoka designed a large floating dock system with a wide ramp extending well into the lake to ensure proper depth and usability. The dock framing and pontoon layout were carefully engineered to straddle the existing cribs, floating cleanly above them without interference.

To address seasonal water fluctuations, an anchoring system was installed. In spring, anchor chains can be extended to accommodate high water levels, and in summer they can be tightened to reduce bounce and movement. A custom ramp connection allows the dock to move naturally with the water while remaining securely fastened to the shoreline.

A set of clean, streamlined dock poles was incorporated to serve dual purposes: stabilizing the structure and providing convenient tie-off points for boats and water accessories. These poles can be loosened or lifted in winter to allow the dock to flex with snow and ice conditions.

Design Features

  • Large floating dock with expanded entertaining space

  • Wide, gradual-access ramp from shoreline

  • Engineered pontoon system designed to float over existing cribs

  • Adjustable anchoring system for seasonal water levels

  • Multi-functional dock poles for stabilization and boat tie-offs

  • Winter-ready flexibility for snow and ice conditions

The Result

The finished dock provides a spacious, stable, and highly functional waterfront hub. What was once an aging structure is now a beautiful and inviting gathering space where the homeowners can comfortably host family and friends.

The dock enhances both the enjoyment and overall value of the property, creating a safe, accessible, and visually appealing extension of the cottage lifestyle. It has quickly become a favourite place for relaxing, swimming, and spending time on the water.
